Before Peterson Cartridge introduced .408 CHEYTAC casings, options for this caliber were limited in the US. The brass available was sourced internationally, often out of stock, and reputedly subpar in quality. In 2015, CheyTac® approached us with a request to develop tool packs for manufacturing .375 and .408 casings.
The .375 CHEYTAC shares its parent case with the .408 CHEYTAC, with the former being more popular in the US and the latter enjoying greater popularity elsewhere. Originating as a military round, the .408 CHEYTAC finds significant usage in military units, hence the adoption of the metric designation. The metric equivalents for these calibers are 9.5 x 77 for .375 and 10.36 x 77 for .408. To ensure clarity, our headstamp typically includes both the imperial and metric designations.
As you may be aware, larger calibers pose greater challenges in producing consistent, high-quality casings. The .408 CHEYTAC, headstamped as 10.36 x 77, presented no exception. Our tooling development team dedicated 17 months and over 1,000 man-hours, exploring 49 iterations of dies and stems, before identifying the optimal combination for crafting casings we believe surpass those commonly used in CheyTac® chambered firearms.
Our objective was clear: to manufacture .408 CHEYTAC casings with hardness values throughout the head and sidewalls that would endure more firings than our competitors' offerings. Our ballistician has consistently achieved up to 15 reloads from our CheyTac® casings without encountering issues such as sticking, neck splits, or head separation. We confidently assert that these casings represent the pinnacle of precision, consistency, and durability in the CheyTac® market.
