Description
BERGER .338 300gr Hybrid OTM Tactical Bullets
Berger .338 300gr Hybrid OTM Tactical is a heavyweight match-grade bullet designed for long-range shooting, precision rifle competitions, and applications where very high consistency and predictable external ballistics are required.
The 300gr Hybrid OTM Tactical uses one of Berger’s most recognizable designs — the Hybrid Ogive, combining tangent and secant ogive geometry. This gives the bullet a very high ballistic coefficient while making it less sensitive to setup variations than traditional pure-secant VLD designs.
With a bullet weight of 300 grains / 19.44 g and ballistic coefficients of G7 BC 0.421 and G1 BC 0.822, this bullet is aimed primarily at shooters who demand excellent ballistic performance at long and extreme distances.
Hybrid Ogive – the key feature
Berger’s Hybrid profile combines two ogive geometries:
- a tangent section closer to the bearing surface,
- a secant section forming the aerodynamic front profile.
The purpose is to combine the advantages of both designs. Tangent ogives are generally known for being more tolerant of small setup differences, while secant ogives allow lower aerodynamic drag and higher ballistic coefficients.
The result is a bullet with excellent aerodynamic efficiency that is generally considered easier to tune than traditional VLD-style bullets.
This is one of the main reasons why Berger Hybrid bullets are so highly regarded among long-range shooters.
Very high ballistic coefficient – G7 0.421
Berger lists the following ballistic coefficients for this bullet:
G1 BC: 0.822
G7 BC: 0.421
For modern long, boat-tail bullets, the G7 ballistic coefficient is particularly useful because the G7 drag model more closely represents the shape of streamlined long-range projectiles than the traditional G1 model.
A high BC allows the bullet to retain velocity more effectively and reduces the effects of aerodynamic drag.
This becomes increasingly important in long-range and ELR shooting, where differences in bullet efficiency become more significant as distance increases.
OTM construction – Open Tip Match
OTM stands for Open Tip Match.
This construction should not be confused with a conventional hollow-point design. The small opening at the nose is created during the bullet jacket forming process.
The design is focused primarily on:
- high consistency,
- uniform mass distribution,
- manufacturing precision,
- stable external ballistics.
Heavy-duty J4 Precision Jacket
The Berger OTM Tactical line uses thicker J4 Precision Bullet Jackets.
According to Berger, the Tactical line was designed to remain reliable under the higher mechanical stresses encountered in demanding precision and tactical applications.
Berger manufactures OTM Tactical bullets using the same types of machinery, tooling, materials, and tight production tolerances used for its match-grade target bullets.
J4 jackets have long been one of the characteristics associated with Berger bullets in the precision shooting community.
Berger .338 300gr OTM Tactical – advantages over competing bullets
The strongest feature of the Berger is not a single record-setting specification, but the combination of several characteristics in one projectile:
very high BC + Hybrid Ogive + J4 jacket + high manufacturing consistency.
Berger 300gr Hybrid OTM vs Sierra MatchKing 300gr
The Sierra .338 300gr MatchKing #9300 has a listed ballistic coefficient of:
G1 BC 0.768
Berger 300gr Hybrid OTM:
G1 BC 0.822
At the same bullet weight, the Berger therefore offers a clearly higher listed ballistic coefficient.
This is one reason why many long-range shooters who previously used 300gr MatchKings have shown interest in Berger Hybrid designs.
Berger 300gr Hybrid OTM vs Lapua Scenar 300gr
Lapua Scenar 300gr GB528:
G7 BC 0.368
Berger Hybrid OTM:
G7 BC 0.421
The difference is significant, and in terms of published aerodynamic performance, the Berger is clearly above the classic 300gr Scenar.
The Lapua Scenar remains a highly respected match bullet known for quality and precision, but the Berger uses a more aggressive aerodynamic profile.
Berger 300gr Hybrid OTM vs Hornady 300gr A-Tip
Hornady’s 300gr A-Tip is one of the few direct competitors with an even higher published BC.
Hornady lists approximately:
G7 0.435 at Mach 2.25
Berger:
G7 0.421
The A-Tip therefore has a slight advantage in pure ballistic coefficient.
However, the Berger uses a different Hybrid Ogive design without an aluminum tip, and its Hybrid profile is very well established among long-range shooters for combining high BC with comparatively low sensitivity.
For that reason, choosing between the Berger Hybrid and Hornady A-Tip cannot be reduced to BC alone.
What do shooters praise about the Berger 300gr Hybrid OTM?
In user discussions and long-range shooting communities, several advantages are mentioned repeatedly.
Excellent accuracy at long range
Shooters comparing the Berger 300gr OTM with the 300gr Sierra MatchKing have reported cases of tighter groups at longer distances.
Good wind performance
Its high ballistic coefficient makes the design particularly attractive in shooting disciplines where wind drift becomes one of the main factors affecting results.
Lower sensitivity of the Hybrid design
Shooters often mention that Berger Hybrid bullets are easier to achieve consistent results with than traditional VLD designs.
Berger manufacturing consistency
Berger has long been associated with benchrest, F-Class, precision rifle, and long-range shooting. Shooters particularly value the consistency of bullet geometry and the quality of J4 jackets.
Proven 300gr .338-class design
The 300gr Berger Hybrid OTM is one of the most recognizable heavyweight .338 bullets used in long-range applications.

Why choose the Berger Hybrid design?
The Berger 300gr Hybrid OTM Tactical is particularly notable for combining:
- a very high ballistic coefficient,
- a heavyweight 300gr design,
- Berger’s proven Hybrid Ogive,
- premium J4 jacket construction,
- high dimensional consistency,
- a design intended for precision shooting,
- excellent long-range aerodynamic performance.
It is not simply a bullet with a high BC.
Its main technical advantage is the balance between the aerodynamic efficiency of secant/VLD-style designs and the greater tolerance associated with tangent ogive geometry.
