In a recent experiment, prompted by a surplus of time, our ballistician embarked on a unique endeavor: testing the limits of our .308 casings. Loading five casings to SAAMI max pressure, he subjected them to rigorous firing sessions using our Universal Receiver setup, meticulously measuring pressures and velocities with each shot. After 20 firings, with no signs of case deterioration, he decided to push further. Firing them an additional five times yielded the same result—intact casings. Encouraged by this resilience, he continued, firing each casing an additional six times, bringing the total to an impressive 31 firings per casing.
Despite the prolonged testing, the casings remained in good condition, exhibiting no signs of wear or damage. Eager to assess their accuracy after such extensive use, our ballistician took them to an outdoor range. Using a lighter load and a Tikka T-3 bolt action rifle with a 20-inch barrel, he achieved exceptional accuracy, grouping five shots into three tight holes at 100 yards, even amidst somewhat windy conditions.
Following 32 firings, slight expansion of the primer pockets was observed, approximately 0.001 of an inch, but they remained tight enough for further use. Notably, there were no cracks or signs of head separation, highlighting the durability of Peterson .308 Win casings.
For those interested in Small Rifle Primer (SRP) pockets, it's essential to consider their advantages and limitations. While many competitive shooters prefer SRP for their longer primer pocket life and consistent ignition, caution is advised when using them in extreme temperatures. Additionally, it's crucial to ensure compatibility with your rifle and bolt to avoid potential issues like pierced primers. Consulting with a gunsmith and understanding your rifle's setup beforehand can enhance your reloading and shooting experience.
We invite enthusiasts to explore the possibilities with Peterson .308 casings and share their experiences, especially those who undertake the challenge of pushing them to failure.
